A Scenic Seafront Run with a Welcoming Atmosphere
Every Saturday morning, hundreds of participants gather to enjoy this free-entry event, embracing inclusivity and a healthy sense of community.
The Route and Experience
The 5km course, set along a flat, well-marshalled promenade, offers expansive coastal views and a refreshing sea breeze. It’s open to everyone, from fitness enthusiasts to those who simply enjoy being outdoors.
Volunteers, participants, and organisers are quick to praise the event’s welcoming and communal spirit.
Parkrun Ambassador Mike Faulkner Says:
“Whether you run it, walk it, or jog it, the Swansea Bay Parkrun reaches out to many people of all ages and abilities.”
The event, which began over a decade ago with just 100 participants, now boasts an average weekly turnout of 500 runners. It is part of a UK-wide network of similar events.
A Community of Support
Encouraging New Runners
Parkrun co-director Karen Dusgate became involved as a runner and was initially encouraged by a doctor to tackle health issues. She started by walking, then running, and soon became part of the Parkrun family. She now volunteers and runs with friends, describing the event as diverse and inclusive, even for those who use wheelchairs or push prams.
Volunteer Ursula Arnold on the Spirit of Parkrun
“People can be scared if they’ve not run before or are low on fitness, but there’s no pressure here; you can go at your own pace and there’s always a tail walker, so you’re never last. It’s all about enjoying yourself.”
Parkrunner Hannah Shares:
“The event isn’t all about people who run excellent times. It’s about meeting new people, having a coffee afterwards, and being part of the community. Nobody cares how fast you do it!”
One Parkwalker praised the “sincere support” given by volunteers along the course, saying the event gives a sense of achievement and encourages exercise that may not otherwise happen.
